- Description
- This dataset provides information on groundwater monitoring wells included in EGLE's Statewide Groundwater Monitoring Network, including well location, well construction details, lithology, and groundwater elevations (i.e., water level measurements). These data are used to observe short-term and long-term trends in groundwater elevations across Michigan, which provides information on aquifer sustainability. This information is crucial for managing current and future water use demands among multiple water use sectors, including public and private drinking water supplies, agriculture, and industry, as well as for protecting aquatic and other natural resources. EGLE's Statewide Groundwater Monitoring Network is currently under development. EGLE is working to add additional wells beginning in 2026 to the network and once available, those wells will be added to this dataset. Monitoring well data will be updated as needed as additional wells are added to the network and as additional groundwater elevation data is collected. The frequency of collection of water level measurements will vary depending on the well, ranging from continuous monitoring using sensors placed in the well, to quarterly, semi-annually, or annual water level measurements that are manually collected using an electronic water level tape. This dataset is also provided to the U.S. Geological Survey National Groundwater National Monitoring Network (NGWMN) using an ArcGIS REST API Web Service. The NGWMN is a compilation of selected groundwater monitoring wells from Federal, State, and local groundwater monitoring networks across the nation. NGWMN data can be found on the U.S. Geological Survey National Groundwater Network web application. For more information on EGLE's Statewide Groundwater Monitoring Network, please contact Sydney Ruhala, GRMD, 517-648-7791 or by email at RuhalaS@Michigan.gov NGWMN Well Sites Field Descriptions: Field Name Description SiteNo Unique well identification number or code Latitude Site latitude, in decimal degrees Longitude Site longitude, in decimal degrees (negative for Western Hemisphere) SiteName Site Name used by EGLE HorzDatum Horizontal reference datum code for the latitude and longitude of the well HorzMethod Method of measuring latitude and longitude HorzAcy Accuracy associated with latitude and longitude measurements Altitude Elevation of the land surface at the site AltUnits Code for unit of measurement associated with the Altitude field AltDatumCd Vertical reference datum code for the altitude of the well AltMethod Method of measuring altitude AltAcy Accuracy of the altitude value for the well NatAquiferNm National aquifer name used by the USGS for U.S. Principal Aquifers NatAquiferCd National aquifer code used by the USGS for U.S. Principal Aquifers LocalAquiferNm Local aquifer name LocalAquiferCd Local aquifer code StateNm Name of the state or territory within which the well resides CountyNm Name of the county within which the well resides WellDepth Depth of the well from a specified point of reference SiteType The type of groundwater site (Well or Spring) AquiferType Characteristic of the type of aquifer that the well is completed in (Confined or Unconfined).
