Satellite detected water extent over Zambezia Provinces, Mozambique as of 24 March 2023
Description
**UNOSAT code TC20230221MOZ, GDACS Id: 1000961** This map illustrates satellite-detected surface waters in Zambezia Provinces, Mozambique as observed from a Sentinel-1 image acquired on 24 March 2023 at 05:00 local time and using an automated analysis with a machine learning method. Within the analyzed area of about 20,000 km2, about 330 km2 of land appear to be flooded. Based on Worldpop population data and the detected surface waters in the analyzed area, the potentially exposed population is mainly located in the district of Maganja Da Costa, with ~10,000 people, Cidade De Quelimane with ~4,500 people, Inhassunge with ~ 3,500 people and Maquival with ~ 3,000 people. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT). Important note: Flood analysis from radar images may underestimate the presence of standing waters in built-up areas and densely vegetated areas due to backscattering properties of the radar signal.
