This frequently flooded hydrologic boundary comprises approximately 1,550 square miles of alluvial valley in the lower Yazoo Basin of Mississippi. The Yazoo Backwater, Mississippi, Project was authorized by the Flood Control Act (FCA) of 18 August 1941 (House Document (HD) 359/77/1, as amended by the Acts of 22 December 1944 and 27 October 1965 (HD 308/88/2) and the Water Resources Development Act of 1986 and 1996. The Yazoo backwater area of the lower Yazoo River Basin, which included at least a portion of the following six counties in Mississippi: Warren, Issaquena, Sharkey, Yazoo, Humphreys, and Washington. The Yazoo backwater area is in the southern portion of the Yazoo River Basin, bounded by the Mississippi River levee on the west and the valley wall on the east and south. The southern tip of the Yazoo backwater area is just north of Vicksburg, MS.
