The program works to create a safer environment by reducing traffic hazards in the roadway and encourages physical activity children need to maintain good health. Providing avenues for children to walk and bike to school can promote a child's sense of independence and increase learning readiness in the classroom. The SRTS grant program is funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation and administered by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). The program funds both physical infrastructure improvements near schools (for example, sidewalk repairs, improved crosswalks, and signage), as well as educational activities to encourage walking and biking. Interested schools work with the City of Detroit's Complete Streets team to identify needed and priority improvements at their schools and then apply for grant funding through MDOT. More information about the program is available from the Complete Streets' Safe Routes to School webpage . Each row in the dataset represents a school that has participated in the SRTS program, and includes the School Name, Address, Status of the SRTS project, Award Date, Construction Start and Completion Dates, the State of Michigan Center for Educational Performance and Information (CEPI) Educational Entity Master (EEM) database Entity ID, the Council District and Neighborhood where the school is located, and Address and Parcel IDs. School name, address, and Entity ID data was sourced from the City of Detroit's Primary and Secondary Schools dataset, which is based on a subset of the State of Michigan Center for Educational Performance and Information (CEPI) Educational Entity Master (EEM) database.</dc:description><dc:format>ArcGIS FeatureLayer</dc:format><dc:identifier>https://hub.arcgis.com/datasets/d74a3edf88724cda9ae8a22f91d6185a_0</dc:identifier><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:publisher>Detroit Open Data</dc:publisher><dc:rights>Public</dc:rights><dc:title>Detroit Safe Routes to School Projects [Michigan--Detroit]</dc:title><dc:type>Web services</dc:type><dc:coverage>Michigan--Detroit</dc:coverage><dc:coverage>Michigan</dc:coverage><dc:date>Last Modified: 2026-04-24</dc:date></oai_dc:dc>
