- Abstract
- This data represents LiDAR elevation information for Shawano County, Wisconsin in 2015. The following derivative products are available: classified LAS, tiled DEM, intensity images, and hydro breaklines. [Geographic Extent: Shawano County, Wisconsin, covering approximately 909 square miles. Dataset Description: The Shawano County, WI LiDAR project called for the planning, acquisition, processing and derivative products of LIDAR data to be collected at a nominal pulse spacing (NPS) of 0.7 meters. Project specifications are based on the U.S. Geological Survey National Geospatial Program Base LIDAR Specification, Version 1.2. The data was developed based on a horizontal projection/datum of NAD83 UTM Zone 16, meters; NAVD1988 (Geoid 12B), meters. LiDAR data was delivered in RAW flight line swath format, processed to create Classified LAS 1.4 Files formatted to 1,143 individual 1,500-meter x 1,500-meter tiles. Tile names correspond to the US National Grid. Corresponding 1-meter gridded bare earth raster DEM files tiles were created using the same 1,500-meter x 1,500-meter schema. Hydro-flattened breaklines were produced in Esri file geodatabase as well as Esri shapefile format. Ground Conditions: LiDAR collection began in Fall 2015, while no snow was on the ground and rivers were at or below normal levels. In order to post process the LiDAR data to meet task order specifications, Quantum Spatial established a total of 140 control points (40 calibration control points and 100 QC checkpoints). These were used to calibrate the LIDAR to known ground locations established throughout the project area. ]
- Purpose
- This data is intended for reference and mapping purposes, and may be used for basic applications such as viewing, querying, and map output production, or to provide a basemap to support graphical overlays and analysis with other spatial data. [Classified LAS files are used to show the manually reviewed bare earth surface. This allows the user to create breaklines and raster DEMs. The purpose of these lidar data was to produce high accuracy 3D hydro-flattened digital elevation model (DEM) with a 1-meter cell size. These raw lidar point cloud data were used to create classified lidar LAS files, 3D breaklines, hydro-flattened DEMs, and contours as necessary.]
- Supplemental Information
- Data is available for download from: https://web.s3.wisc.edu/wsco-wisconsinview/lidar/ Detailed, original metadata accompanying this LiDAR data is available inside the ‘Metadata’ folder from WisconsinView. [USGS Contract: G10PC00026 Task Order Number: G15PD00640 CONTRACTOR: Quantum Spatial Lidar data were acquired and calibrated by Quantum Spatial. All follow-on processing was completed by the prime contractor.] Bare Earth Points: Bare earth LiDAR is digital elevation data of the terrain surface consisting of irregularly spaced points, each with x/y location coordinates and z-value. The data have been subjected to automated and manual editing to remove vegetation, buildings, and other man-made structures. Classified LAS: Point classification using semi-automated techniques on the point cloud to assign the feature type associated with each point. Lidar points can be classified into a number of categories including bare earth or ground, top of canopy, and water. The different classes are defined using numeric integer codes in the LAS files. Contours: A line through all contiguous points of equal elevation value. Contours are vector features used to represent the elevation of a landscape in a relatively familiar way. They are typically used for basemaps and general topographic representation. Derived Terrain: A vector data set composed of regularly spaced points and natural features such as ridges and breaklines. A DTM augments a DEM by including linear features of the bare-earth terrain. Hydro Breaklines: Breaklines maintain the definition of water-related features in an elevation model. They are used to capture linear discontinuities in the surface, lake shorelines, single-line drains for small rivers, and double-line drains for large rivers. Countywide Digital Elevation Model (DEM): A DEM represents the bare-Earth surface, removing all natural and built features. The dataset contains a single file covering the entire county. Tiled Digital Elevation Model (DEM): A Digital Elevation Model (DEM) represents the bare-Earth surface, removing all natural and built features. The data contains (possibly) hundreds of individual files available to download as small tiled geographic areas over the extent of an entire county. Digital Surface Model (DSM): A Digital Surface Model (DSM) captures both the natural and built/artificial features of the environment.
