- Abstract
- This data represents LiDAR elevation information for Vernon County, Wisconsin in 2010. The following derivative products are available: bare earth points, classified LAS, 2-foot contours, derived terrain, hydro breaklines, and a countywide DEM. For bare earth points: [The Bare Earth LAS was developed from a LiDAR flight flown in the Spring of 2010 as part of the Vernon County 2010 WROC project.]For classified LAS: [The Point Cloud LAS was developed from a LiDAR flight flown in the Spring of 2010 as part of the Vernon County 2010 WROC project.]For 2-foot contours: [The Bare Earth DTM was developed from LAS points and breaklines collected from a LiDAR flight flown in the Spring of 2010, as part of the Vernon County 2010 WROC project. The DTM is used to develop a TIN (Triangulated Irregular Network). Two-foot contours meeting National Map Accuracy Standards were generated from the TIN.]For hydro breaklines: [The Breakline vectors were developed from the LiDAR points to define hard and soft breaklines, mostly hydrography, in the terrain surface, as part of the Vernon County 2010 lidar Project.]For DEM: [The Bare Earth DEM was developed from LAS points and breaklines collected from a LiDAR flight flown in the Fall of 2010, as part of the Vernon County 2010 Project. The DEM is a raster data set in ESRI GRID format with an X, Y, Z value located at the center of each 5 ft. by 5 ft. cell. The DEM was generated from a DTM meeting ASPRS class II Standards.]
- Purpose
- This data is intended for reference and mapping purposes, and may be used for basic applications such as viewing, querying, and map output production, or to provide a basemap to support graphical overlays and analysis with other spatial data. For bare earth points: [The 2010 Bare Earth LAS and SHP files contain a subset of the total LiDAR point cloud. This dataset constitutes the bare terrain surface data set with all other classifications omitted. File formats include: ESRI Shapefile and LAS format. Coupled with the breakline features this data set is the 2010 Vernon County digital terrain model.] For classified LAS: [The 2010 Point Cloud files contain the total LiDAR point cloud. This dataset constitutes all classifications of lidar points. File formats include: ESRI Shapefile and LAS format.] For 2-foot contours: [The 2010 two-foot contours were developed as a derivative product for use in general surface modeling and depiction. File formats include ESRI Shapefile and AutoCAD DWG format.] For hydro breaklines: [The 2010 breaklines dataset contains the hydrographic breaklines necessary for terrain surface development. This dataset establishes the deviation parameters for the development of derivative terrain data. File formats include: ESRI shapefile and AutoCAD DWG format.] For DEM: [The 2010 Bare Earth two-Foot DEM was developed as a derivative product for use in general surface modeling and depiction.]
- Supplemental Information
- Data is available for download from: https://web.s3.wisc.edu/wsco-wisconsinview/lidar/ Detailed, original metadata accompanying this LiDAR data is available inside the ‘Metadata’ folder from WisconsinView. Bare Earth Points: Bare earth LiDAR is digital elevation data of the terrain surface consisting of irregularly spaced points, each with x/y location coordinates and z-value. The data have been subjected to automated and manual editing to remove vegetation, buildings, and other man-made structures. Classified LAS: Point classification using semi-automated techniques on the point cloud to assign the feature type associated with each point. Lidar points can be classified into a number of categories including bare earth or ground, top of canopy, and water. The different classes are defined using numeric integer codes in the LAS files. Contours: A line through all contiguous points of equal elevation value. Contours are vector features used to represent the elevation of a landscape in a relatively familiar way. They are typically used for basemaps and general topographic representation. Derived Terrain: A vector data set composed of regularly spaced points and natural features such as ridges and breaklines. A DTM augments a DEM by including linear features of the bare-earth terrain. Hydro Breaklines: Breaklines maintain the definition of water-related features in an elevation model. They are used to capture linear discontinuities in the surface, lake shorelines, single-line drains for small rivers, and double-line drains for large rivers. Countywide Digital Elevation Model (DEM): A DEM represents the bare-Earth surface, removing all natural and built features. The dataset contains a single file covering the entire county. Tiled Digital Elevation Model (DEM): A Digital Elevation Model (DEM) represents the bare-Earth surface, removing all natural and built features. The data contains (possibly) hundreds of individual files available to download as small tiled geographic areas over the extent of an entire county. Digital Surface Model (DSM): A Digital Surface Model (DSM) captures both the natural and built/artificial features of the environment.
