FWS R5 ES Maine Owl Pellet Project fieldworker [U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service]
Description
This survey was created to enable the public to record information about owl pellets collected throughout the state of Maine before sending these pellets to the University of New England for dissection. This project is part of an effort to document the range of one of North America's rarest mammals, the northern bog lemmings. Northern bog lemmings are small, vole-like rodents that occupy bogs, fens, and other moist habitats. These lemmings are notoriously difficult to detect using conventional methods such as trapping. Although northern bog lemmings may elude humans, they likely fall prey to owls, which are expert hunters. When an owl captures a rodent, it swallows it whole. However, owls are unable to digest fur, bones, and other tough body parts, so they must regurgitate these items as a pellet. Researchers interested in sampling small mammal communities can dissect these pellets and use small details of the bones found within to determine what the owl ate. By having members of the public collect owl pellets from throughout Maine, then having University of New England students dissect these pellets, we hope to find new records of northern bog lemmings. For more information or questions, or to get involved, please contact us atowlpellets@une.edu.Complete metadata for this Feature Layer (Fieldworker view)can be viewed under the metadata tab.Thumbnail Photo Credit: Mael Glon, USFWS
