- Abstract
- This data represents Lidar elevation information for Waushara County, Wisconsin in 2024. Contract No. 140G0221D0012, Task Order No. 140G0224F0128; CONTRACTOR: NV5 Geospatial. The following derivative products are available: classified LAS, hydro braklines, a countywide DEM, tile index, intensity images, and tiled DEMs. [These lidar data are processed Classified LAS 1.4 files, formatted to 3624 individual 2250 ft x 2250 ft tiles; used to create intensity images, 3D breaklines, and hydro-flattened DEMs as necessary. Geographic Extent: 1 county in Wisconsin, covering approximately 644 total square miles. Dataset Description: The WI_5County_B24, Waushara County project called for the planning, acquisition, processing, and derivative products of lidar data to be collected at a nominal pulse spacing (NPS) of 0.35 meters. Project specifications are based on the U.S. Geological Survey National Geospatial Program Base LiDAR Specification, 2024 Rev. A. The data were developed based on a horizontal projection/datum of NAD83(2011) / WISCRS Waushara (ftUS), Foot US and vertical datum of NAVD88 Geoid 18, Foot US. LiDAR data were delivered as processed Classified LAS 1.4 files formatted to 3624 individual 2250 ft x 2250 ft tiles, as tiled intensity imagery, and as tiled bare earth DEMs; all tiled to the same 2250 ft x 2250 ft schema. Continuous breaklines were produced in Esri file geodatabase format. Ground Conditions: LiDAR was collected in spring 2024, while no snow was on the ground and rivers were at or below normal levels. In order to post process the LiDAR data to meet task order specifications and meet ASPRS vertical accuracy guidelines, NV5 Geospatial utilized a total of 37 ground control points that were used to calibrate the LiDAR to known ground locations established throughout the project area. An additional 97 independent accuracy checkpoints, 77 in Bare Earth and Urban landcovers (77 NVA points), 20 in Tall Weeds categories (20 VVA points), were used to assess the vertical accuracy of the data. These checkpoints were not used to calibrate or post process the data.]
- Purpose
- This data is intended for reference and mapping purposes, and may be used for basic applications such as viewing, querying, and map output production, or to provide a basemap to support graphical overlays and analysis with other spatial data. [To acquire detailed surface elevation data for use in conservation planning, design, research, floodplain mapping, dam safety assessments and elevation modeling, etc. Classified LAS files are used to show the manually reviewed bare earth surface. This allows the user to create intensity images, breaklines and raster DEMs. The purpose of these LiDAR data was to produce high accuracy 3D hydro-flattened digital elevation models (DEMs) with a 0.5 meter cell size. These raw LiDAR point cloud data were used to create classified LiDAR LAS files, intensity images, 3D breaklines, and hydro-flattened DEMs as necessary.]
- Supplemental Information
- Detailed vendor XML metadata is available from: https://web.s3.wisc.edu/wsco-wisconsinview/lidar/Waushara/Waushara_2024_3DEP_Delivery/Metadata/Metadata.zip Sample lidar deliverables and descriptions: Bare Earth Points: Bare earth LiDAR is digital elevation data of the terrain surface consisting of irregularly spaced points, each with x/y location coordinates and z-value. The data have been subjected to automated and manual editing to remove vegetation, buildings, and other man-made structures. Classified LAS: Point classification using semi-automated techniques on the point cloud to assign the feature type associated with each point. Lidar points can be classified into a number of categories including bare earth or ground, top of canopy, and water. The different classes are defined using numeric integer codes in the LAS files. Contours: A line through all contiguous points of equal elevation value. Contours are vector features used to represent the elevation of a landscape in a relatively familiar way. They are typically used for basemaps and general topographic representation. Derived Terrain: A vector data set composed of regularly spaced points and natural features such as ridges and breaklines. A DTM augments a DEM by including linear features of the bare-earth terrain. Hydro Breaklines: Breaklines maintain the definition of water-related features in an elevation model. They are used to capture linear discontinuities in the surface, lake shorelines, single-line drains for small rivers, and double-line drains for large rivers. Countywide Digital Elevation Model (DEM): A DEM represents the bare-Earth surface, removing all natural and built features. The dataset contains a single file covering the entire county. Tiled Digital Elevation Model (DEM): A Digital Elevation Model (DEM) represents the bare-Earth surface, removing all natural and built features. The data contains (possibly) hundreds of individual files available to download as small tiled geographic areas over the extent of an entire county. Digital Surface Model (DSM): A Digital Surface Model (DSM) captures both the natural and built/artificial features of the environment.
