On Aug. 30, 2013 NGPC announced the temporary closure of all services and vehicle access to a number of state recreation areas (SRA) and state historical parks (SHP) inorder to redirect Game and Parks staff from the closed areas in an effort to reduce the more than $30 million of identified deferred maintenance needs of an aging Nebraska State Park System and meet compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and environmental requirements. The parks areas can be categorized as: State Park: State parks are public use areas containing statewide significant scenic, scientific and/or historical values and being of sufficient size to allow adequate development without infringing upon the primary values. Historical Park: Nebraska's state historical parks are sites of notable historical significance to the state. Recreation Area: Nebraska's state recreation areas offer resources primarily associated with active outdoor recreation pursuits, day-use activities and camping. All of the state's water-oriented areas are of this classification. In addition to the park locations the layer includes detailed information about the activities and amenities available in each park. The reference layers include trails network within the state park system and amenities available to the trail users.
