U.S. Fish & Wildlife ServiceThe Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971 eliminated aboriginal land title within Alaska and instead established twelve distinct regions, with each region having one private, for-profit Alaska Native regional corporation. The purpose of this system was to enable Alaska Natives to become shareholders in their regional and village corporations, and to receive dividends generated by those coporations.
