Cleveland GISDescription This dataset provides information on infant mortality in Cleveland, Ohio, including annual infant mortality rates (IMR) from 2012 to the present. The dataset includes IMR stratified by year, race, ethnicity, and neighborhood of residence at the time of birth. Infant deaths and live births are identified through birth and death certificates filed with the Ohio Department of Health, Bureau of Vital Statistics. Infant mortality rates are calculated as the number of infant deaths before one year of age divided by the number of live births, multiplied by 1,000. This represents the number of infant deaths per 1,000 live births. Tables in this dataset include: Infant Mortality Rates: Includes infant mortality rates per year and by race and ethnicity. 5-Year IMR by Neighborhood: This table includes five‑year average infant mortality rates by Cleveland neighborhood or statistical planning area, beginning with the 2017-2021 period. These multi‑year averages help smooth year‑to‑year variation and highlight longer‑term patterns. State and national data come from publicly available CDC WONDER datasets. Methods Birth and death records were aggregated to summarize patterns in mortality and natality among Cleveland residents. Data were grouped by year, underlying cause of death, demographic characteristics (such as age, sex, and race/ethnicity), and other selected factors relevant to public‑health reporting. Leading causes of death were identified using the standard methodology developed by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), which ranks causes based on the underlying cause of death. Age‑adjusted mortality rates were calculated to allow comparisons across populations with different age distributions. All analyses reflect counts and rates for Cleveland residents.
