More specifically, a port is a maritime facility comprising one or more wharves or loading areas, where ships load and discharge cargo and passengers. Ports are typically on sea or ocean coasts, but can be found inland on canals or rivers that grant access to oceans eventually. The National Waterway Network is a geographic database of navigable waterways in and around the United States, for analytical studies of waterway performance, for compiling commodity flow statistics, and for mapping purposes. The Navigable Waterway Network Nodes dataset is periodically updated by the United States Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) and is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT)/Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD).
