Abstract
This data set comprises the Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) mapsfor the shoreline of Western Lake Michigan. ESI data characterizecoastal environments and wildlife by their sensitivity to spilled oil. TheESI data include information for three main components: shorelinehabitats; sensitive biological resources; and human-use resources.
Purpose
This data is intended for reference and mapping purposes, and may be used for basic applications such as viewing, querying, and map output production, or to provide a basemap to support graphical overlays and analysis with other spatial data. [The ESI data were collected, mapped, and digitized to provide environmental data for oil spill planning and response. The Clean Water Act with amendments by the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 requires response plans for immediate and effective protection of sensitive resources.]
