This dataset tracks northeastern Illinois municipalities' requirements and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). All local governments must conduct an ADA self-evaluation and provide a public accessibility notice. Local governments with 50 or more employees at any point of the year (either full- or part-time) must: Designate an employee as an ADA coordinator . Create a transition plan . Keep documents related to the self-evaluation for three years, including the consulted stakeholders and descriptions of areas examined, problems identified, and modifications made. Establish a grievance procedure for documenting and addressing accessibility issues. This dataset answers how many employees each municipality has and if they have a self-evaluation, transition plan, grievance procedure, or ADA coordinator. More information and a summary of this data can be found in the 2024 northeastern Illinois accessibility compliance snapshot article. Who created this data? How and when? In the fall of 2022, Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) staff emailed and called all 284 municipalities in the region to ask about their compliance with Title II of the ADA. CMAP received 189 responses — a 67 percent response rate. In January 2024, Illinois Department of Transportation provided CMAP with additional data from a separate ADA survey. In March 2024, CMAP performed a web-scan of municipal sites to check for ADA documentation. The data was most recently updated with results from the 2024 CMAP Municipal Survey . Where can I find the latest data? How frequently is it updated? This dataset is scheduled to be updated annually as part of the Accessible Communities program and will coincide with the CMAP Municipal Survey when possible. Questions?
