Abstract
Areas designated in an effort to divide the responsibility of fire suppression within the state. The intensive and extensive areas are at a higher natural risk for fires and the DNR has the statutory responsibility for fire suppression. The distinctions between intensive and extensive areas are defined in Administrative code (NR30).
Purpose
Protection Areas were originally extracted from the Fire Response Units (FRU) layer. Data was collected cooperatively by the Division of Forestry, Bureau of Forest Protection and created as a GIS layer by BTS. In May, 2008, the boundaries were re-digitized to more accurately reflect the true FPA boundaries using Administrative Code (NR 30.01 and NR 30.02) text description as well as field staff support.
