These data are used to observe short-term and long-term trends in groundwater elevations across Michigan, which provides information on aquifer sustainability. This information is crucial for managing current and future water use demands among multiple water use sectors, including public and private drinking water supplies, agriculture, and industry, as well as for protecting aquatic and other natural resources. EGLE's Statewide Groundwater Monitoring Network is currently under development. EGLE is working to add additional wells beginning in 2026 to the network and once available, those wells will be added to this dataset. Monitoring well data will be updated as needed as additional wells are added to the network and as additional groundwater elevation data is collected. The frequency of collection of water level measurements will vary depending on the well, ranging from continuous monitoring using sensors placed in the well, to quarterly, semi-annually, or annual water level measurements that are manually collected using an electronic water level tape. This dataset is also provided to the U.S. Geological Survey National Groundwater National Monitoring Network (NGWMN) using an ArcGIS REST API Web Service. The NGWMN is a compilation of selected groundwater monitoring wells from Federal, State, and local groundwater monitoring networks across the nation. NGWMN data can be found on the U.S. Geological Survey National Groundwater Network web application.
