No current coal mines exist, and locations of historic coal mines are often unknown/incomplete, therefore this dataset of historical coal mine boundaries is known to be incomplete. Coal Mining began in Michigan in the 1800s but the last active mines closed in the 1950s. There has been no economic interest in Michigan coal for many decades; however, EGLE provides available information related to old coal mines when legacy issues arise, typically related to construction projects near old mine shafts. The current dataset was originally compiled by MDNR, Land and Mineral Services Division, Resource Mapping and Aerial Photography Section in 2001. Additional information can be found on the EGLE Coal Mining webpage . For more information, visit Michigan.gov/EGLE/Maps-Data/GeoWebFace or contact EGLE-GeoWebFace@michigan.gov .
