Title
Sidewalks (Tacoma) [Washington (State)--Tacoma]
Description
This dataset will be updated with new sidewalk data in 2026. This dataset represents work completed by Transpo Group as part of the Pedestrian and Bicycle Counts and Facilities Inventory for the City of Tacoma in July 2022. This project was identified as one of several data collection efforts that could help inform the City's Vision Zero plan as well as other future safety analysis. Data was collected citywide for all ARTERIAL streets. Some data collection was expanded to include residential streets within ¼ mile of a school. Two additional fields were added in September 2022: Sidewalk Yes/No and Linear Feet. Speed Limit layer fields were joined to the Sidewalk layer in September 2024. Data is maintained by City of Tacoma Public Works staff. Internal contact: Carrie Wilhelme Senior Transportation Planner Email: cwilhelme@cityoftacoma.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Text from Transpo project memorandum - 07/01/2022 : Sidewalks The City's existing sidewalk layer was utilized to identify gaps in the City's sidewalk network and data as well as sections previously identified as narrow or not present. This was done by analyzing the existing data and finding places where essential data was missing or was indicated as being not present or narrow in width. This extent was further narrowed to areas within the geographic extents of the scope. Sidewalk data collection/curb ramp digitization was eventually extended to include facilities on residential streets within 1/4 mile from land uses designated as schools in the City's GIS system. Once gaps in the network and narrow sidewalk sections were identified, data was collected to fill gaps and determine if any constraints exist to building standard width sidewalks. In addition to the above data collection, the City's sidewalk dataset was corrected using aerial images. Corrections included removing short segments of sidewalk located at intersections that overlap curb ramps and aligning line segments to match the Tacoma 2018 3in aerial. Some segments were also modified in length and added or removed to better suit data consistency. This "digitization" (geographic placement) update as it is referred to in the Deliverable Notes section was completed purely using GIS software.
